Mandatory Costs at University Break $50,000

Published: February 10, 2007

George Washington University, already the most expensive major university in the country, became the first to raise tuition, fees and other mandatory costs above $50,000. Trustees set tuition for students entering the university in September at $39,210, an increase of 3.8 percent; mandatory fees including housing will push that cost to $50,660, a university spokesman said. The tuition will affect only next year’s freshmen; the university sets costs for each class and then freezes the costs for the duration of the students’ attendance.
